Instruction:  A Models Approach

Progress toward mastery teaching is a continuous process of learning and adapting, modifying, and changing.  Good teachers are good learners.  There are always new options the good teacher can consider, even though most of the time good teaching, like any skilled performance, looks completely spontaneous.  The models approach to teaching has proven to be a valuable resource in the instructional repertoire of many teachers and school systems who have used the models daily since the first edition was published thirteen years ago.

The philosophy behind this book is that the process of instruction unites all teachers as professional educators.  The intended audience is teachers of any subject who teach or plan to teach learners of any age.  Teaching is addressed as a challenging, exciting, and demanding profession with great rewards for all who follow it.

The text is divided into three parts:  Part One, Planning for Instruction, Part Two, Matching Objectives to Instruction, and Part Three, Putting It All Together.  Both exercises and activities are included throughout every chapter.  Each exercise is specific, focusing on the particular subject under discussion.  Activities are more general and require that the reader complete them outside the classroom.  New to this edition are websites, which have been included, whenever feasible, at the ends of selected chapters.

The models approach provides the tools that enable teachers to make professional decisions about instruction and share these decisions with other professional instructors through a common body of knowledge.
